We first met Ducky, our swimmer-friendly duck, on February 20th 2019. Abandoned by her friends and family she was living rough by the river Leven, Newby Bridge, when Judith invited her to join us while we paddled the river. Events of that day have been woven into the fabric of club folklore. One eddy led to another; a rapid, a rock, a mis-timed stroke... Judith and Ducky became swim buddies that day and a friendship was forged. Since then Ducky has been making her presence felt around our club and is living life to the full.
The following is the nearest we have to a roll of honour; it records the exploits of those that tried. Of those who pitted their competence and courage against the currents and cataracts conspiring against them and joined Ducky, not going with the flow but braced firm, supporting their comrades in the face of adversity and coming through, dismayed, damp but not downhearted.

A quick cool down in the heat of the day (the paddles soon re-appeared)
Just confirming that the salmon run was "on"... More like Ducky sitting duty - a temporary situation due to kit failure! Caving in a sea kayak, distracted by rock climbers; inevitable outcome! Sheer determination resulted in the inevitable consequence of a 6+ edge Hard-core hide 'n seek under Tees Barrage Whitewater course Poor choice of camera platform; a Bassenthwaite flatwater OC exit Unclear advice led to mid-stream out-of-OC moment SuP on a SoT; inevitable really Practising hard led to unplanned rescue practise Not exactly as planned but our first joint minders Salty water washing machine style surfing action off Anglesey |
