British Canoeing Paddle Awards
This new Paddle Awards were introduced by British Canoeing in 2018. Aimed at all ages and available in any craft, they are for those new to our sport and are an ideal way to develop skills and safe decision making, opening the door to a lifetime of fun and adventure on the water.
Paddle Start Award
The Start Award is the place to start your paddling journey. If you’re new to the sport, want to have fun and learn the basics then this is for you. We’ll cover everything from what to wear to getting in and out of the boat and basic paddling skills.
Who is the Start Award for? Anyone of any age, provided that we have a buoyancy aid and boat that fits! You don’t need any previous experience and may take the award in any craft including kayak, canoe, Sit-on-Top or Stand-up Paddleboard.
Paddler Discover Award
Have you enjoyed the Start Award and are looking to progress? Excellent; the Discover Award could have been created just for you. The Discover Award will help you develop decision-making and practical skills, helping you stay safe as you become a more skilled and independent paddler. You will learn how to choose appropriate equipment and identify those factors which can affect you and your boat while out paddling.
Who is the Discover Award for? Anyone of any age who want to further develop their paddling skills and stay safe on the water. No previous experience is necessary (though the skills developed in the Start Award are a great foundation) and you can take the award using any craft.
Paddle Explore Award
If you would like to become more independent and confident, enjoy self-guided adventures, better control your boat and stay safe on the water then this is the award for you. If you’ve never been paddling before, it might be worth considering the Start or Discover Awards first otherwise the Explore Award will help you take ownership of your decisions and make confident choices about the wind, weather and how they affect the places you paddle.
Anyone can take the Explore award at any age and in any craft; previous paddling experience is useful but not essential.
Ulverston Canoe Club can run these courses on request and at times and places to suit you. Our club coaches will make the sessions interesting, safe and fun while supporting you in developing personal skills and an increasingly independent approach to your paddling. Please contact us at [email protected] for more information on the Start, Discover or Explore Awards.
